In addition to the Career and Technical courses offered at Scriber Lake High School, SLHS students may take advantage of other designated Career and Technical classes offered at Edmonds—Woodway, eLearning, Lynnwood, Meadowdale, and Mountlake Terrace. Bus transportation is provided between Scriber Lake High School and the site of the intra-district class. All intra-district courses require a shared student form at the time of registration.

ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING (VOC211/212)

Grades: 10,11,12

Prerequisite: Drafting 1; Algebra

Open only to students who are serious about pursuing a career involving the technology & skill of drafting using both CAD and boards. Classroom atmosphere simulates a “real world” office environment in which projects are programmed, designed, presented, critiqued, revised, and developed into plans for construction, production, and/or presentation. Portfolios are further developed to include student’s latest work and are prepared for further education admission requirements and/or employment. VICA membership includes local, regional, state, and national skills contests. Field trips, internships, job placement, guest speakers, and web page portfolios are just a few of the benefits of this elite group. Art equivalency available.

BROADCAST FIELD PRODUCTION (VOC778/789)

· This course may be taken as a 7th class.

This afterschool class meets Monday and Wednesday from 2:15 to 3:15 pm at Mountlake Terrace High School and 3 hours each week for Field Production work at a district sporting or special event.

Students will learn the art and craft of broadcast sports reporting and live sports announcing. Students will learn all the skills required to produce professional quality programs including; pre games shows, live sporting events, half time shows, and post-game shows. Students will practice principles of broadcast field production, video engineering and live video internet streaming. Students will create still and moving graphics and edit sports packages for inclusion in the live broadcasts. The class will work with Edmonds sports teams and develop a schedule of events to be covered. Students will be required to be present at events as members of the class production crews.

CARPENTRY AND BUILDING CONSTRUCTION (VOC615/616)

Fee: Purchase of basic tools.

Prerequisite: Drafting skills are helpful. It is recommended that students have some form of medical coverage for this class. Student Accident & Health Insurance plans may be purchased through your high school.

· Periods 5-6

In this 2-hour class taught on the Edmonds Community College campus, students will learn traditional and new green building skills required for entry-level jobs in the construction industry. Topics include concrete footings and foundations, construction materials, blueprint site layout, green construction, roofing, energy management, structural trades, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, interior finishes, safety, CPR and First Aid. Students have opportunity to obtain their Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) 10-hour certificate, earn 21 college credits, and obtain the Construction Industry Training Work Ready Certificate provided through Edmonds Community College. This class includes both classroom and off-site learning experiences, including the possibility of constructing a residential home over the course of the school year. This is a great class for anyone seeking an entry level construction job, pre-apprenticeship training, or wanting to expand their knowledge about the construction industry. District bus transportation is provided. Professional/Technical college credit available.

FIRE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY (VOC251/252)

Prerequisite: Sports Physical and required polo shirts.

· Lynnwood HS Periods 1 and 2

The Fire Service Technology program is for high school students interested in the various careers found in the Fire Service and Life Safety Industry. This course is demanding in nature and requires a positive attitude, willingness to be present daily, and a personal desire to complete all assignments on time. Taught by a former Professional Firefighter, this program offers a unique instructional combination of guest speakers, AV presentations and off -site tours. Instructional areas include: Fire Fighting Training, Fire Rescue Operations, Fire Prevention, Inspection, Fire Investigation, Fire Alarm Communications, Fire Dispatching, and Emergency Medical Services. Students will have the opportunity to attend a full day at the State Fire Academy in Live Fire Training Conditions. Students will be required to wear uniform polo shirts while attending class. Uniform may be purchased or borrowed. PE equivalency available. Professional/Technical college credit available.

HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS (VOC056/057)

Fee: Cost of uniform and wristwatch

Prerequisite: Maturity and the ability to do college level work; motivation and physical strength to participate in direct patient care and Tuberculin skin test or chest x-ray prior to direct patient care. Students are required to purchase a surgical scrub uniform, white shoes, and a watch with a second hand for participation in clinicals. In addition, students wishing to take the Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification examination and obtain C.N.A. certification must possess a Social Security Number.

· Mountlake Terrace HS Blocks 1 and 2

This program is ideal for students interested in careers such as Nursing, Medicine, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Respiratory Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging and many others. Students have the opportunity to learn basic patient care skills, medical terminology, communication skills, basic anatomy and physiology, and more. Starting in March of the school year, qualifying students will work with patients and skilled nursing facility residents, under direct supervision from facility staff, program director and program assistant. This program qualifies and prepares the student to undergo Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification testing and obtain a license to practice in an entry-level health care role. This program is articulated with Edmonds Community College; students have an opportunity to apply for 16 college credits. Science, Health and English equivalencies available. Professional/ Technical college credit available.
