Principal's Message

WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

I feel so fortunate to be here as Principal for these students--their creativity, energy, and desire for success energize and motivate me to create the best school experience possible for them.  As you may know, our staff feels the same way.  Over the course of the last several years, we have been working to transform the culture of our school, and we have really done it!  Conversations that in the past used to be confrontational and authoritative now have at their core compassion, empathy, and kindness.  We have a problem-solving mindset here and really rely on strong school-family partnerships to help guide our kids and make their experience here successful.

One of our targeted areas for improvement this year is to increase our attendance rate.  As part of the support for these students, please make sure you continue to express the expectation you have that they attend school for their full scheduled time, even including Family class (Period 1).  Some kids pass off attending Family because it's only 15 minutes, but we do our best to make it valuable by having systematic check-ins with the students, Skyward/credit checks, planning for conferences and campus-wide community building, and most importantly, students earn credit for it.  If students aren't here, they are losing out on credit for one of their classes!  If you are struggling at home with motivating your student to attend, please reach out to your student's Family teacher, counselor, or our Student Support Advocate, and we can partner together.

We are formalizing an Equity committee this year as well -- if you are interested in being a parent representative to help us take a deep look at our policies and practices that could be barriers for our students of color and their families, please let me know.

This is a special corner of the world, and I am so fortunate to be able to be part of it.  Please contact me at any time.  We hope you and your students find what a dearly departed member of our community referred to Scriber as: your "heart home."

Happy Fall,

Andrea
